| Invitations
to formal affairs will usually indicate what type of attire is
expected to be worn. Each of the following phrases indicates a
dress code that you must become familiar with.
Black Tie
It is generally presumed that "Black Tie" events require
formal attire. This means a tuxedo is the most appropriate selection.
However, in today's society "Black Tie" does not specifically
mean "wear a black tie" but simply to dress formally.
White Tie or Full Dress
This indicates a chance for you to look your best. Why not
wear a traditional tailcoat with a white pique wing collar shirt,
a white pique vest, white tie, and black trousers.
Black Tie Preferred
This indicates that guests are not required to wear formal evening
attire but it is preferred. Acceptable attire would include a
Black Tuxedo, White Dinner Jacket, or a dark contemporary tuxedo.
Non-formal Dress Suits are acceptable but not preferred by the
host.
Black Tie Optional
Not quite as strong a statement as "Black Tie Preferred,"
but formal attire is still appropriate. Acceptable attire would
include a Black Tuxedo, White Dinner Jacket, or a dark contemporary
tuxedo. Non-formal Dress Suits are also acceptable.
Black Tie Invited
This phrase is seen more frequently than "preferred"
or "optional." It simply states that attendants are
welcome to dress formally if they desire, but it is not required.
Styles follow the same guidelines as "Black Tie Optional."
Semi-Formal
In many proper social circles, "Semi-Formal" means the
same as "Black Tie." However, this is where your knowledge
of the community and the event should come into play. As a general
rule, if a lady wears a floor-length gown, it is appropriate for
her escort to wear formal attire. If you are unsure about how
to dress, call the host for guidance in dressing appropriatly
for the ocassion.
